I went into labour and immediately was at 10 minute surges of quite decent
intensity. I used hypnobirthing techniques for 3 hours and then woke my partner for
the TENS machine - this was very helpful.
After 7 hours at home I started vomiting with the surges so went to Derriford. I was 2 cm but fully
effaced. I carried on with TENS and remembered to try to relax between surges. I used the TENS
for another 3 or so hours before I felt it was no longer helping. I then was
lucky to get the only birthing pool, and that was like heaven! I only used
breathing plus the water for another 4 hours until I requested gas and air, I
was then about 7 cm and agreed for an ARM as I was tired and wanted to move
things along.
Things then proceeded smoothly in the water with gas and air until I started 'pushing' - my body had taken over and pushing I was, for a good hour until my little girl
was born at 6lb 10 - Isla Rose, after a 20 hour labour from very first contraction to
birth. I had a natural 3rd stage which was lovely, and had an hour of skin to
skin with good success at breastfeeding. I had a small tear and a few stitches
only. I was also blessed with a fabulous midwife.
She is a wonderfully good natured girl, very calm, no problems with breast
feeding at all, no pain/cracked nipple stories for me. Rarely cries. Does wake
every 2-3 hours but is easily pacified.
