I gave birth to Maya at home at 41+6 weeks on
28/11/09, supported by my partner Andrew and independent midwives Evony and Mandy.
I had quite a long pre-labour with Maya. After two nights
and a day of very irregular contractions which were easy to cope with using
hypnobirthing techniques, I got in the bath around
midday and noticed
that I was beginning to make a bit of noise.
Curious to know what was going on, I had a quick feel
of my cervix and thought I felt progress – time to call my midwife!
When Evony arrived I requested a vaginal examination
(the only one I had in labour) and was surprised to find out I was 6-8cm.
Andrew had begun filling the birthing pool (hooray!) and I got
in after around
2pm. I very
quickly found my contractions to be intensifying and needed to focus inwards.
I experienced a gradually growing and overwhelming
urge to push a few hours later and was reassured to feel the top of her
head with my fingers quite easily – in what seemed like no time my body was actively pushing
her out whilst I tried my best to relax and breathe through... Despite this, I found myself vocalising very loudly!
She finally emerged at
7.15pm - Andrew leant over the side of the pool and caught her as
she flew out!
