I gave birth to Maya at home in water at 41+6 weeks on
28/11/09, supported by my partner Andrew and independent midwives Evony and Mandy.
I had quite a long pre-labour with Maya. After two nights
and a day of very irregular contractions which were easy to cope with using
hypnobirthing techniques, I got in the bath around
midday and noticed
that I was beginning to make a bit of noise.
Curious to know what was going on, I had a quick feel
of my cervix and thought I felt progress, but couldn’t reach around to see how
dilated I was – time to call my midwife!
When Evony arrived I requested a vaginal examination
(the only one I had in labour) and was surprised to find out I was 6cm (Evony
later said this stretched to 8cm during a contraction).
Andrew had begun filling the birthing pool and I got
in very happily after around
2pm,
as the bath wasn’t the most comfortable place to be in at this point. I very
quickly found my contractions to be intensifying and needed to focus inwards.
I experienced a gradually growing and overwhelming
urge to push a few hours later and was reassured to feel the top of her
head quite easily – in what seemed like no time my body was actively pushing
her out whilst I tried my best to relax and breathe through... Despite this, I found myself vocalising very loudly!
She finally emerged at
7.15pm, pink,
alert and beautiful. Andrew leant over the side of the pool and caught her as
she flew out under the water!
